Inventée dans l’Angleterre du XIXe siècle, la dentelle tissée sur métiers Leavers est aujourd’hui principalement fabriquée dans le nord de la France. Sophistiquée et innovante, elle est l’un des métiers d’art de la mode et du luxe. En France, elle est protégée par la marque Dentelle de Calais-Caudry®, propriété de la Fédération française des dentelles et broderies. La Cité de la dentelle et de la mode (CIDM) a été inaugurée le 11 juin 2009, à Calais, haut lieu de la dentelle mécanique. Elle comprend le musée, une salle d’exposition temporaire, les espaces de développement culturel (centre de documentation, salles pédagogiques, auditorium), les services aux publics (restaurant, boutique, hall d’accueil). La CIDM conserve quatre grands types de collections : - textiles : 15 à 20.000 pièces de dentelle à la main et mécanique, plus de 3.000 pièces vestimentaires, de lingerie et d'accessoires ; - industrielles : 4.000 à 5.000 objets techniques (machines et leurs pièces détachées, série d’outils, etc.) ; - documentaires (1600 registres d’échantillons de dentelle, documents graphiques, dessins) ; - artistiques (œuvres textiles contemporaines).
