Constitué lors de la Révolution française, le cabinet numismatique rassemble des collections antiques, médiévales, royales, provenant de dons et d'acquisitions ( collections Fauris de Saint-Vincens, Martin, Augier, Vernin...). Le Cabinet des Monnaies et Médailles n'a pas de budget propre et dépend du budget des Archives municipales. Créé en 2005, l'atelier de restauration métallique est un observatoire du comportement des collections monétaires. Il est destiné à restaurer les objets numismatiques (monnaies, médailles, jetons…) des collections publiques françaises qui le désirent.
